To Whom It May Concern:

My journey to civil engineering started from my interests in science. Driven by the curiosity towards the science behind the engineering I went to the Republic Specialized Physics and Mathematics High School in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where I excelled in math and physics. Together with my aspiration to create a better society by serving people, I was aspiring to become a structural engineer. Undergraduate education at Nazarbayev University, research, and field experienceG1  prepared me to pursue an advanced degree in structural engineering at Columbia University at the City of New York.

My plans following completion of my current studies are to move directly into graduate work to pursue the master’s degree in structural engineering. I intend to start working in Kazakhstan as a structural engineer and to develop its construction industry. For this, I gained a solid background in civil engineering and stuG2 died core structural engineering courses. In order to become more qualified, I G3 am narrowing my direction to the structural engineering and applying to the master’s degree. My undergraduate study is English-based and oriented on the American standards of the construction such as ASCE 7 and PCI, which will simplify my learning process in the USA. Furthermore, I developed teamwork skills by performing group projects in the undergraduate program and by conducting research at Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Republic of Korea. In addition, I honed leadership skills in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2018 competition, where I was a team leader and responsible for the team management. Due to good governance, teamwork, and persistence, my team and I are the first Kazakhstani team that passed a three-phase rigorous selection of the competitionG4  organized and sponsored by Royal Dutch Shell Plc. In the master’s degree, teamwork and leadership skills will be useful for collaboration with other students at the university as well as for an interaction with colleagues in the construction industry in the future. Moreover, practice in the construction company gave me a clear vision of a structural engineer’s role, which reinforced my desire to go to this specialty. The construction industry in Kazakhstan experienced during the internship is different from the civil engineering educated at the university, which gives me many opportunities for the industry development later. In the postgraduate study at Columbia G6 University, I am eager to conduct research on the health monitoring in the Civil Engineering & Engineering Mechanics Department at Columbia University.
