THE CORRELATION BETWEENPACI MODEL AND STUDENTS’ INTEREST IN LEARNING ENGLISH AT THE FIRST YEAR OF SMAN2 SAMARINDA IN 2017/2018 ACADEMIC YEARA Proposal By:AchmadIvansyah Obos1505085059 FACULTYOF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION MULAWARMANUNIVERSITY ACADEMICYEAR 2015 CHAPTER1INTRODUCTION1.
1 Background of the Study Interestin student learning today is different from the past, because there is no “Interesting”things in English learning in the classroom, students usually do things thatshould not be done in the learning process, such as disturbing their friends, going to the toilet, sleeping and others. This is because the English teacherswho teach in old and boring way, the interest of learning English becomes lowand only a few students who still pay attention when the teacher explain thematerial, although they also do not understand what is explained by the teacher.Hilgradargued that interest is situation or condition of paying attention and enjoyingin some activities and contents. Students’ interest in learning becomes themost important thing in achieving their learning goals, students with aninterest will surely get the results they expect, if students have no interestin learning, it will be difficult to learn English. Kartini Kartono (1985:5)says that if a student has a strong interest in learning a subject, she or hewill pay close attention to that subject. So there should benecessary tools or media that can improve the English language learning to beinteresting. In this research, the researcher tries to find out what is thecorrelation between PACI Model and students’ interest in learning English atthe first year of SMAN 2 Samarinda in 2017/2018 academic year. 1.
2 Research Questions1. Isthere any significant correlation between PACI Model and students’ interest inlearning English at the first year of SMAN 2 Samarinda in 2017/2018 academicyear? 1.3 Research Objectives1. Tofind out if there is any significant correlation between PACI Model andstudents’ interest in learning English at the first year of SMAN 2 Samarinda in2017/2018 academic year.
1.4 Hypothesis of the Study1. NullHypothesis (H0)”PACIModel has no significant correlation with students’ interest”2.
AlternativeHypothesis (Ha)”PACIModel has a significant correlation with students’ interest” 1.5 Definitions of Key Terms 1. Correlationis the comparison between one object with another.
Correlation is theconnection between two things in which one thing changes as the other does(Oxford University Press, 2003:94). 2. PACIModel is a framework which consists of PowerPoint, Audacity, Camtasia andInternet. This framework is used to teach through technology. Adapting Allessi& Trollip (2001), Model of Instruction and Mayer (2009), MultimediaLearning, the researcher created the PACI model. It stands for PowerPoint (P),Audacity (A), Camtasia (C) and Internet (I). The intersection amongst thesefour software create four knowledges and skills.
3. BenjaminS Bloom (1971:16-17) defines interest as the terms of the individual’s liking, enthusiasm, preference, and desire. Interest is a desire want students want toknow or learn something. 4. SMA2 Samarinda is a senior high school which located in Kemakmuran street number 27.
CHAPTER2REVIEWOF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Definitionof PACI ModelPACI Model is a framework used to teachby teachers with using technology as the main media, it consists of PowerPoint,Audacity, Camtasia and Internet. These four knowledgeand skills cannot be separately. The content or lessons that are designed, selected, and created by using each of these software are combined to produce avideo multimedia for teaching specific lessons and in this research is Grammarlesson. (Designing and Developing Supplemental Technology of PACI ModelMaterials through Blended Learning Methods, Limbong, E. p.286)PACI model is designed complete withunique fonts, colorful, animation, graphics intended for students have a highlearning interest and can help the learner to be able to understand thepresented material. The results show that project-based learning has proven tobe effective and efficient in integrating and implementing the design anddevelopment of the PACI model.
(Designing and Developing SupplementalTechnology of PACI Model Materials through Blended Learning Methods, Limbong,E. p.272)2.1.1 Concept of PACIModelPACI Model as a media for teaching andhelp teachers use technology in teaching, PACI Model consists of PowerPoint,Audacity, Camtasia, and Internet.
The following below are some explanations of thesemedia used:1. PowerPointissoftware that is embedded with Microsoft Office and was introduced many yearsago. It provides a user-friendly interface that lets users create colorful andinformative displays in any subject area. It covers backgrounds, animations, sounds, and functions that can be formatted to create a limitless variety ofslides for presentation and to set to automatically show according to a presentschedule. It can also be hyperlinked to other technology sources (Morrison& Lowther, 2010). 2. Audacityis a simple software for editing sounds, for instance cutting, copying, pastingand deleting part(s) of the recording, inserting silences, pauses or music, splitting recordings into separate tracks, mixing tracks, raising or loweringthe volume, speeding the recording up or down, and even improving the audioquality by removing constant background noise (Martínez, 2010).
3. According to Silva (2012) Camtasia is a screen-capture softwarethat directly records all movement and activities on screen that we are workingon such as typing in word-processing application, surfing the Internet, usingphoto editing or web design software and interacting with social networks oronline activities. 4. Internetisthe a network consisting of cables and radio signals used to connect millionsof computers to other computers to form the Internet that can be used toexchange massive database of information (Morrison & Lowther, 2010). 2.
2 Definitionof InterestInterestis a thing to have if someone has a willingness to do something, according to Hurlockinterest is the result of the motivation which can convey the people to do andto choose all activity that they want.Interestbecomes very important thing for someone if he/she wants to do something likeinterest in learning English. If someone have a strong intentionin learning English, surely he/she will learn with full attention and feelhappy, so he/she will achieve the results to be achieved, basically interestcomes from the hobby, motivation and willingness. DavidR. Stone and Elvin C. Nielson said, “On personal is a positive interest thatwill increase the chance for success.
” So, a sense of interest needs to bepossessed by students if he/she wants to learn something and when he/she feelsinterested then it will be easy to achieve success in several fields. 2.3 RelevantPrevious StudiesThe researcher took a researcher by Nana Nurjanah (104014000304)Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta with the title “Therelationship between students’ interest in speaking and their speaking score”. Thisresearch was attempted to find out if there is a significant relationshipbetween students’ interest and their speaking score. The researcher gets thedata by using questionnaire as an instrument, using Pearson Product momentformula to calculate the score and 50 students as a sample. The researcherusing correlation study and distributing 25 items each of questionnaires. Then, the result is there significant relationship between students’ interest andtheir speaking score.
The second research was took a journal by Effendi Limbong with thetitle “Designing and Developing Supplemental Technology of PACI Model Materialsthrough Blended Learning Methods” This research was designed with the aim todescribe the researcher’s experiences in designing and developing multimediatechnology of the PACI Model. The researcher used interview as an instrument. To collect the data, 9 Pre-service EFL teachers were participated.
The resultof this study that blended learning is effective and efficient for PACI Modeland support EFL teachers to teaching materials. CHAPTER 3RESEARCH METHODOLOGY3.1 Research Design In this research, the researcher used quantitative approach by using correlationresearch design between two variables and compared those two variables, PACIModel and students’ interest. In order to find out the correlation betweenthose variables.
3.2 Population and SampleThepopulation of this study is the first year students of SMAN 2 Samarinda in2017/2018 academic year consisting 9 classes. To get the data, the researcheronly took 42 students in 1 class namely IPS 1 class. In sampling, theresearcher used Non-random sampling because the sample was chosen by himself. 3.
3 Data Collection Technique Inorder to get the data, the researcher does these procedures: 1. At the first meeting, theresearcher give the exercise to students before they were taught by PACI Model. 2. Students answer theexercise and give back to the research.
3. The researcher scoresthe result of students exercises. 4. The researcherstarted to applied the PACI Model as a media to teaching several times and getstudents attention. 5. In the end of thelesson, the researcher once again give an exercise to each students in terms toknow if there is an improvement about their interest in learning using PACIModel or not. 6.
The researcher scores the resultagain to know if there is an improvement of students score. 3.4 Instruments The researcher using 2 instruments to get the data, PACIModel and some exercises paper. PACI Model as a media to teaching and exercisesconsists of 20 item of questions.3.
5 Data Analysis Technique Theresearcher using correlation technique in order to compared the score ofstudents’ interest and scores of PACI Model. To find the correlation amongthese 2 variables the researcher using Product Moment Correlation coefficientformula: rxy : Correlationcoefficient betweenstudents’ interestand PACI Model N :Number of Respondents X : Distribution of students’ interestscore Reference List1.
