The current poster presentation examines the LaMia Flight 2933 planecrash by using the Haddon Matrix. In 29th November 2016, the passenger plane,which moved from Santa Cruz de la Sierra (in Bolivia) to Medellin (inColombia), fell near the mountainous terrain near Medellin; and it wastransporting 77 passengers including the Chapecoense football team fromBrazil’s First Football League teams and the aircrew. This accident in which 71people died was referred to as the accident that destroyed a football team. Theworld of sport was saddened by the plane crash, which the Chapecoense footballteam encountered when it would be playing at Copa Sudamericana Final with theAtletico Nacional football team. Only six people survived, which three of themwere footballers. The Civil Aviation Agency, which has completed its investigation of theaccident, announced that the accident was due to the end of the aircraftfuel.
It was stated that the accident was not a sabotage or technical error,but it occurred completely due to a human-caused mistake. It was revealed thatthe pilot both did not take fuel on the plane and reported the emergency late.It was also underlined that LaMia which is Bolivian-based airline was not beappropriate for the international flight standards. The Brazilian club planned to fly directly from Brazil to Colombia atthe beginning, but this plan was rejected.
The budget of Chapecoense Club didnot allow direct flight with another aircraft. It was decided on the currentroute. The flight distance between Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Medellin is 1605nautical miles which means 2972 kilometers. On the other hand, according toofficial technical reports, a standard British RJ-85 type aircraft whichdesigned for short and medium distances can take 1600 nautical miles (2960kilometers) with maximum fuel. The pilot of the 2933 requested priority for landing to Jose MariaCordova airport control tower due to fuel problems, but there was another planewhich made an emergency landing. The priority emergency landing permit wasgiven to another plane, and it was said to stay in 21 thousand feet for theaircraft carrying Chapecoense football team.
The airplane, which circled overabout 15 minutes, wanted to increase its range by decreasing speed andaltitude, but eventually it started to experience electronic problems. Thecaptain of the plane repeated the emergency landing request and the towerallowed for this time. However, the plane which experienced power problems fellinto 22 kilometers south of Medellin, 17 kilometers from the airport.
