Everyday single day we use light bulbs to provide us light, we mostly think that there is only one type of light bulb, but until we don’t do research for an assignment or project we don’t know the truth. There are many types of bulbs, light bulbs to be specific. a few well-known bulbs are; LED, Compact Fluorescent bulbs, Halogen, Incandescent and many more. For this essay I am going to be focussing on the main topic which are Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs in short form CFL. Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs are low wattage energy efficient light bulbs, designed for standard lighting.
If we think of it compact fluorescent light bulbs have a few advantages and disadvantages. First I am going to start off with the advantages, the first advantage is that Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs use 50-80% less energy than incandescents. Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. The second advantage of CFLs are that they don’t create large amount of heat within a few hours. Also CFLs last longer the incandescent light bulbs.
Now for the disadvantages; Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs get easily affected by extreme weather, such as rain, snow and other weathers they are preferred to be used indoors. The next disadvantage is that CFLs contain a mixture of gases and mercury in them which is toxic, to think of it all light bulbs contain mercury in the but CFLs have a little more than the other bulbs. Compact Fluorescent light bulbs cannot be disposed in landfills because of the mercury which can pollute the land and the water. Mercury is to make the Compact Fluorescent light bulbs more energy efficient. The manufactures have agreed to reduce the mercury used in the light bulbs by 5mg per a bulb.
If we look at the cost of Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs they aren’t that expensive if we can minimize the cost. The price of CFLs start from 6 Canadian dollars and go as far as 25 Canadian dollars. The lifespan of Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs is about 8,000 hours for one bulb. If you have a incandescent light bulbs and you want to change it to CFL, don’t just remove the working incandescent light bulb and throw it out, you should wait until the incandescent bulb stops working on it’s own and then replace it with a CFL. If you just remove it will be a wastage of the incandescent light bulb and the Compact Fluorescent light bulb.
Now days we are all very good at following the city rules, but when it comes to disposing a light bulb we probably mess up somewhere. To dispose CFLs there are certain steps to dispose it, and how to dispose a CFL that has shattered into pieces.
How to properly dispose a non-working CFL, Do’s and Don’t:
Step #1: Never throw CFLs in ordinary waste, since they contain mercury in them it is toxic for the environment.
Step #2: If you have a burnt CFL collect from around your house and take it to a recycling facility.
Step #3: If you can’t find a recycling facility near you than look for a hazardous waste disposal facility.
How to properly dispose a shattered CFL, Do’s and Don’t:
Step #1: Do NOT vacuum the glass and pieces, by doing that you can spread the mercury around, instead, ventilate the room, have all the people/pet in the room to go out.
Step #2: Open a window to air out the gases, wait for 5-10 minutes. While waiting put on some rubber gloves.
Step #3: Use a stiff piece of paper or cardboard to carefully scoop up the broken glass pieces, and put the pieces in a ziplock bag.
Step #4: Get a towel paper and dampen the paper, then clean the area where the bulb had shattered with the rubber gloves. Put the towel paper in the same ziplock bag.
Step #5: Take off the rubber gloves and put them in the ziplock bag, then seal the bag and take it to a recycling facility or a hazardous waste disposal.
Both ways Compact Fluorescent light bulbs are good for the environment and bad. They are good in a way by using less energy then incandescent light bulbs, and they are bad for the environment by containing mercury in them which is toxic. Compact Fluorescent light bulbs have been developed more often and since the society uses the CFL a lot I think that they are only doing us a favour.
In my opinion I think Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs are a great invention along with LED light bulbs. Compact Fluorescent have a lifespan of 8,000 hours which is what I like about them, CFLs are a great tool for around the house and buildings. I would buy CFLs and put them in my house when I grow up.
