Notably through the novella “Anthem” byAyn Rand the theme is quite clear, the struggle to gain individuality. The painthat the transgressor endures only proves what he believes to be true, and thesmile on his face was a sign of victory and understanding that the collectivefeared him. As a matter of fact, the strive for individuality that Equality andthe Transgressor face is the theme for the Novella and is directly connected tothe story line. Toillustrate the meaning of the transgressors action you must understand that theTransgressor of the Unspeakable Word and Equality 7-2521 both suffer for whatthey believe in. As the quote reads “As the chains were wound over their body at the stake, and a flame set to the pyre, the Transgressor looked upon the City. There was athin thread of blood running from the corner of their mouth, but their lipswere smiling.
” The pain that the transgressor endures only proves what hebelieves to be true, and the smile on his face was a sign of victory andunderstanding that the collective feared him for being more powerful asindividual rather than a part of the whole. More over when the council rejectsEquality’s invention and his actions, through this he grew to understand theirfear of one’s self interests over powering the interests of the whole. Actually, what lead Equality to his understanding of the council’s fears is the way thecouncil responds to his forthcomings. Regarding the council’s reaction, theyare astonished not only at the invention but what equality did to create it, hedisregarded the laws of the society to pursue personal interests. Now in the case of theTransgressor, who burns at the stake for speaking the word “I,” the word thatis not permitted to be spoken by his anti-individualistic society that believesthat things can only be done as a collective and not as an individual such asthe creation of the candle by the twelve scholars. And in the very similarsituation of Equality 7-2521, who is beat profusely for refusing to reveal hissecret tunnel and, later is ridiculed and exiled for seeking detachment fromthe whole and pursuing scientific studies on his own resulting in his creationof his lightbulb.
In fact, the two are connected in two distinct ways. First, the transgressor and equality grow as individuals and discover the word “I”. Second, though society tortures both physically, neither one suffers emotionally duringthe torture because they know they must suffer for their individuality.Additionally, in the eyes of the author Ayn Rand physical suffering of the bodymeans nothing when it is for a cause which has such great meaning.
