Natural gasWhat is Natural Gas?Natural gas is a substance that “occurs deep beneath the earth’s surface. Natural gas consists” of Methane, which is “a compound with one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms”, as the main component. It also consists of little amounts of “hydrocarbon gas liquids and non hydrocarbon gases”. It is used “as a fuel and to make materials and chemicals”. Natural gas is formed by decayed “plants and animals” (diatoms) which built up into thick layers over millions of years, and it is sometimes mixed with sand and silt. Over time, these layers of decayed plants and animals were buried deep inside of the earth. Then, pressure and heat turned these layers into coal, oil and natural gas. Sometimes, Natural gas would find its way into rocks and the earth through cracks and spaces in them. Natural gas can also sometimes be found in forms of shale, sandstone and other sedimentary rocks, where it is called shale gas or tight gas. Natural gas is also sometimes found in coal deposits, where it is called coalbed methane.How is Natural Gas found?Rocks that contain natural gas can be underground, offshore and underwater. Geologists use seismic surveys to find the right place for drilling wells to find natural gas. Seismic surveys are a way of finding resources by using vibrations to detect whatever resources geologists are searching for. But seismic surveys underwater work differently, geologists send sonic waves instead of vibrations to find what they are looking for. Geologists sometimes also use explosives to find natural gas. Then, if a promising site is found, it is drilled and tested for use.How does the natural gas get to your home? Natural gas then flows up the well by putting chemicals, water, and sand in the well. This natural gas that comes out of wells is called wet natural gas. Then, Methane and other useful gases are separated from natural gas for use near the well or the processing plant. Then, this natural gas is labelled dry/consumer-grade natural gas. Then it is sent through pipelines to underground storage fields or to companies and buyers and then eventually to your home.The price of natural gas Overall, natural gas is pretty cheap. For example: natural gas costs $0.0219 per cubic foot, and propane, a substance similar to natural gas, costs $0.0392 per cubic foot. That might not seem like a big difference, but when you go into millions, the difference is huge. For example: $0.0219 x 1,000,000=$21,900 (natural gas per million cubic feet) and $0.0392 x 1,000,000= $39,200 (propane per million cubic feet). That’s a difference of $17,300!Pros of natural gasWhile natural gas is cheap, it also has much more good to offer. Natural gas produces less soot, which means it produces less pollution than other resources such as gasoline and diesel. It releases 45% less carbon dioxide than coal and 30% less than oil, thus it has less impact on the environment. Natural gas has an abundant supply, which means it is available worldwide. Natural gas has it’s infrastructure in place, which means it uses the same technology as the one used to harness other resources such as fossil fuels, and that makes natural gas much more easier to get and use. Natural gas can be easily transported in ships. It is lighter and easier to transport in terms of carbon footprint. This makes natural gas a smarter option to be used in homes and businesses. Cons of natural gas Natural gas has a lot of good to offer, but it also has some cons, too. Natural gas is highly flammable, which means it can easily catch fire and cause explosions if not handled with extreme caution. Natural gas produces greenhouse gas emissions. That means, when it is burnt, it emits carbon dioxide, monoxide and other carbon compound in the atmosphere, thus contributing to the greenhouse gas effect. Natural gas is not sustainable, which means it is non-renewable and it will run out one day and nature would not be able to replenish it anytime soon, just like other fossil fuels. Natural gas will only last 50-100 more years. This means it is no solution to the ever growing need of energy of the world. Natural gas is not easy to use, which means before using natural gas, all the components except for methane have to be extracted from it, and that is very hard to do. These components consist of several byproducts such as hydrocarbons, sulfur, water vapour, carbon dioxide, helium and nitrogen. Natural gas is pretty cheap, but it’s pipelines are very expensive. They cost $2.8 million per mile! Natural gas also causes deforestation by cutting down trees for finding and using natural gas wells.A solution to some problems A solution to the problems natural gas causes might be RNG, Renewable natural gas. As of today, half of the Canadian population relies on affordable, clean, safe and reliable natural choice gas. RNG is a small but growing part of this reliability of natural gas. RNG is a natural gas produced from organic waste from farms, forests, landfills and water treatment plants which is readied in the same way as natural gas for use, which makes it cheap because workers do not have to use equipment any different than the one that is used for natural gas and other resources such as fossil fuels. Then that gas is captured, cleaned and put into pipelines to be used in the same way as natural gas. Many natural gas customers in Abbotsford, BC, have been getting RNG from natural waste from farms since 2010 as a part of a project between Fraser Valley Biogas and FortisBC. Collecting even 10% of Canada’s RNG power would create enough clean energy to heat a million Canadian homes for a year.Why is renewable natural gas a solution?RNG is a 100% percent renewable resource, which means it will not run out, and nature will replenish it quickly. RNG will be produced and readied for use very quickly. For example: Potential production of RNG is 1,200 billion cubic feet per year, equal to just a bit over Canada’s 2014 natural gas consumption. Only 20% of this power would equal to 10% of Canada’s gas demand and result in 14 megatons per year of greenhouse gas emissions reduced, which is the same as removing 3.1 million passenger cars from the road. RNG will also help Canada’s economy because there are over 12 RNG projects going on in Canada, which could result in Canada becoming a world leader in terms of RNG. Provincial governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia are supporting or examining RNG. RNG is also very abundant, which means it is available worldwide. That is why I think RNG is a solution to the problems of natural gas.A fun fact about natural gas Since natural gas is totally colourless, tasteless and odorless, workers add a substance to natural gas called Mercaptan to make it smell like something, which is rotten eggs, as a safety feature in case of a natural gas pipeline leak.CitationsBusiness News Network – Canadian Business, Finance and Markets News.
