Gobind Singh Super Thermal plant is a coal powered thermal power plant located
at village Ghanauli, Ropar, Punjab, India. It is one of the coal based plant
under Punjab State Power Corporation Limited. The plant has a total of 6 power
houses with a total production capacity of 1260 MW. Coal is used in the thermal
plant to produce steam from water and then the steam produced is used to run
the turbines which are in turn coupled to generators to produce electricity.
The coal that is used is mined at coal mines located in Bihar, West Bengal and
Madhya Pradesh and more 50 sites all over India called collieries and the coal
is transported by trains to the power station. The water that is used for steam
production is supplied by Nangal Hydel channel. (PSPCL, 2017)

Operating Features :

typical thermal power plant works on a Modified Rankine cycle. In this cycle
the coal is crushed to fine powder and this fine powdered coal is burnt in a
boiler which in turn change water to steam. The steam is then fed into the
turbines where it is converted to mechanical energy and this in turn rotate the
turbines which in turn rotate the generators to produce electricity.

Rankine Cycle works as follows.

Coal preparation:

preparation system: the raw coal is first crushed to small pieces and then it
is sent to pulveriser to grind into fine powder so that it is burnt properly. Pulveriser
can be of: ball and tube mills, ring and ball mills,

Dryers: sometimes coal gets wet during transport and
this reduces the burning efficiency of coal during combustion. In order to
avoid this coal is dried.

Magnetic separator: in order to remove the metal impurities,
the coal is passed through magnetic separator because the impurities can cause
wear and tear of the machinery.

Storage of coal:

The coal which we get after the crushing is stored in
order to have ample of stock available if the supply of raw coal is not
continuous due to weather conditions or failure of transportation.

The coal can be stored in two ways:

 Live storage:
it’s the ready to use coal kept in stock at boiler’s room if there is no
further     supply of raw coal. The coal
for 24 to 30 hrs are kept over there.

Dead storage: the coal that is stored for future use.

Boilers and auxiliary: boilers  are used to produce steam from the water and
this steam is taken out at desired temperature and pressure.

Air Preheater : the heat which comes out with fuel gas
out of economiser is utilized to preheat the air before delivering the
combustion chamber and also it is used to dry the coal.









Environmental Performance

Since the commissioning of the thermal plant in 1984
this plant has been producing electricity  continuously and produce 6942 mu annually. But
there has been a lot of dispute regarding the workers being exposed to various health
hazards because the platform on which the coal is unloaded is not covered and
this lead to spread of coal dust into the surrounding air which leads to many
diseases. The workers are also not provided with the necessary masks and shoes
which put workers at further risk () . the flyash produced by the Guru Gobind
Singh Super thermal plant was required to use by the road making companies but
this is not followed and instead the flyash is deposited at the ash dykes near
the thermal plant (). Since the thermal power plant has been operating for more
than 25 years therefore, the government is proposing to upgrading the Guru
Gobind Singh Super thermal plant to ultra super critical plant which will increase
its efficiency and also its emmisions.
