Self-Construal is rooted on the study of self-definition, in which it is
classified between two domains, particularly the independent of others and interdependent
with others. Basically, an independent self-construal is characterized by
separateness from others, by attention to one’s abilities, traits, preferences,
and wishes, and by the primacy of one’s individual goals over those of
in-groups. On the other hand, an interdependent self-construal is characterized
by a sense of fundamental connectedness with others, by attention to one’s role
in in-groups, and by the primacy of group goals over one’s individual goals (Cross, 2011).

In view thereof, the
cultural dimension of individualism and collectivism has been put into service
as a support theory to the relevance of self-construal in cultural diversity. As
an overview, individualism-collectivism is based on Hofsted’s lecture about Dimensions
of National Culture. The Individualism can be defined as a preference for a
loosely-knit social framework in which individuals are expected to take care of
only themselves and their immediate families. In contrary, Collectivism represents
a preference for a tightly-knit framework in society in which individuals can
expect their relatives or members of a particular in-group to look after them
in exchange for unquestioning loyalty. A society’s position on this dimension
is reflected in whether people’s self-image is defined in terms of “I” or “we.”

professionals undertook this kind of research study to carefully examine the
significance of independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal using
the Individualism and Collectivism as a theoretical framework. (Markus & Kitayama, 1991) But taking a moment
