In this study, Antecedent-Behaviour-Consequence (ABC)
model has been used as a model to relate the antecedents of workplace bullying
towards the propensity of workplace bullying. This model is created by Dr.
Albert Ellis, and it is used to analyse the behaviour in the aspect of
physiological, which is tool to understand more about the behaviour. In this
model, antecedent (A) is a stimulus which precedes the behaviour of interest or
target behaviour (Webster, 2017). In short,
antecedents trigger behaviour (B) that is either leads to desirable or
undesirable behaviour, and in this study it leads to undesirable behaviour. A consequence (C) is the impacts from a given
behaviour, resulting in strengthening, maintaining or extinguishing the given
behaviour. In short, consequences motivate behaviour which is influences by
ABC model has been utilized in order to understand and
prevent workplace bullying. This model emphasized the importance of identifying
the contributing factors of workplace bullying (antecedents), the specific
bullying actions that happen in the workplace between the perpetrator and the
victim, and the impacts towards individual and organization as a result of
workplace bullying (consequences) (Lipinski & Crothers, 2013).
To relate with this study regarding propensity of
workplace bullying, this model can be seen from two aspects which are the
perpetrator and the victim. This study shows that the antecedents of the
propensity of workplace bullying are the factors that influence the bullying
acts to happen. There are several factors include interpersonal conflicts,
competitive working environment and poor leadership. From the perpetrator
perspectives, these antecedents (A) will lead to negative behaviours (B)
whereby the perpetrator will perform bullying acts to the victim whether it is
work-related or person-related bullying. These negative behaviours will give
consequences (C) towards the perpetrator as well as the victim. Personally, the
perpetrator may be feeling powerful assuming that he or she can control others.
In a bigger picture, it will give bad image of the perpetrator in the
Meanwhile, from the victim perspectives, these
antecedents (A) mentioned will caused him or her to experience bullying either
he or she realizes it. When the victim experienced bullying, it will lead the
victim to certain behaviours (B), for an instance is adhering to the acts and
change of attitude such as becoming quiet person. These negative behaviours
will gives consequences (C) to the victim as an individual and to organization.
The consequences of that behaviour caused the victim into deep pressure and it
will affect the victim’s mental health. Both perspectives resulted towards
negative consequences (C) to the organizations such as higher absenteeism and
reduced commitments among employees.
