Iam applying for Master in Rural Development Engineering starting in September2018. I graduated with a Second-Class Upper degree in Agricultural Science witha specialization in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management from KwameNkrumah University of Science and Technology. My knowledge and understanding ofagriculture stems from my childhood.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in arural part of Ghana where family farms range in size from just a few acres tomore than 10,000 acres. My family have been farmersas far back as anybody can trace. I wish to study agriculture, not because ofmy family, but despite them. My father and grandfather are both convinced theday of the farmer has passed, and have always tried to steer me into anotherfield. I disagreed. I have always understood the importance ofagriculture to civilization, but from that moment forward I realized just howmuch more importantagriculture would be in the future.
There willalways be a need for people to grow food. I strongly feel that farmers are the creatures of Godin absence of whom life would be very difficult. I am really motivated that bystudying this field further at your University, I will develop all thedexterities that a good farmer should have. Learningis an endless process which is more closely related to the importance of developing human resources. Sam Farr the American Politician said, to makeagriculture sustainable, the grower has got to be able to make a profit butthis is not the case with farmers in Ghana. Despite the number of acres of landthat they cultivate, they still earn less income.
My interest in Master in RuralDevelopment Engineering developed during my second year at the undergraduatelevel when I studied fundamental issues in rural and urban sociology. Bothagricultural policy and agricultural finance that I offered during my finalyear made me realize that, most of the problems facing our agriculture sectorin Ghana are as a result of low income being received by farmers andalso wide market margins between marketers and farmers. I have genuine desireand vision geared towards helping my country in solving most of the challengesfacing our farmers and providing means and ways to maximize their returns andreducing the wide market margin between the marketers and farmers. Currently Iam a research assistant at the University Information Technology Service departmentof the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. At the department Iam responsible for helping students get research materials online. My goal is tostudy hard from the masters’ level to PhD level so that I can gain muchknowledge and skills on the issues of Rural Development Engineering which Ibelieve will increase my awareness about the latest trends within the field andhow I can contribute to the overall mission and purpose of giving back to mycountry. During my finalyear of study at the university, I undertook various related courses.
Thiscourses truly broadened my knowledge on application economics in agricultureand equipped me with the needed knowledge to further my studies. I also workedon a project which was to find out consumers’ awareness, perception andwillingness to pay for fish sausage in the Kumasi and Accra Metropolis ofGhana. The University inHungary has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in its advanced academicprograms, especially in agriculture, and it is an important leader in theglobal economy. I believe the school will provide me with all the vital neededskills and knowledge in order to continue progressing and reach my potential inthis field. To wrap things up,I would like to stress that I am fully determined to make the most out of thisopportunity. I trust that being a student at a University in Hungary would notonly empower my career development, but would give me the framework to utilizemy full potentials.
I am thankful forconsidering my application and I look forward to a favorable response.
