Having a fulltime certified librarianCurrent research has proved that “students at every grade level who have access to a school library and a school librarian achieve greater success that students who don’t have such access” (PA School Project, 2012) the school librarians role in this is to have knowledge of resources in all formats. School librarians empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers and ethical users of information. “Schools that either maintained or gained an endorsed librarian tended to have more students scoring advanced in reading and to have increased their performance that school that either lost their librarians or never had one” (Lance, 2012). 2. Implementing a flexible scheduleBeing accessible allows an extension of learning outside of the classroom to take place. Research shows “students in elementary schools that used flexible scheduling for library access achieved higher scores than those students in schools that used fixed library schedules.” (School Libraries Work, 2008). This allows more options to accommodate both students and staff to access information and read for academic purposes and pleasure on a regular as needed basis. 3. More collaboration with teachers and staffEncouraging the use of the library by integrating core subjects with meaningful and diversified lessons using a wide variety of resources for all learning styles. The PA School Library project states “The school librarians most important responsibility is to collaborate with teachers in the teaching-learning process so that all students can learn and achieve academic success”. The effectiveness of a library media program depends a great deal on the support it receives. Building relationships with our students and staff empowers them and us as well as advocates the importance of our library.Plan of Action:Meet with school improvement team to discuss current research, school policies, student and teacher needs, and schedules.. Collaborate and document SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) to increase students reading and writing skills at grade level of proficient or above.. Organize and implement a plan of action to meet goals.Assess and monitor student growth and deficiencies, making adjustments as needed.
