are valuable assets that can be lost to disk failures, negligence or theft, and
storing them safely depends on the mediums chosen for Data storage. So here follows the discussion about
the different types of Data storage mediums and its importance, in terms of
lifespan, reliability and access time for these various storage methods.

Magnetic Tapes are the storage mediums which stores information in the form
of digital data on their magnetic tapes. They include cassette where magnetic
tapes are being packed into a cartridge-type. But due to the need of tape moving
all together further or backward corresponding to the information needed, the
information access time is large and hence is expensive. The life span of these
tapes also depends on (i) when the tape will starts losing magnetic charge on
the tape: hence the data (ii) also, when the tapes’ layers starts crapping out,
hence causing loss of data. The typical life span being 7-10 years. Floppy disk
is the data storage mechanism which
uses same mechanism as such of magnetic tapes, whose life span typically ends
up to 3-5 years only. 

Raid( Redundant Array of
Independent Disks) is one such data storage
virtualization technology that combines multiple
physical disk drive components into one or more logical units for the purposes
of data redundancy along with performance improvement. In other words (inorder to protect
the data from drive failures and added concern about the data longetevity), Raid is nothing but replicating the data in
different places on multiple hard disks. It is stated that, an array of inexpensive drives could beat the performance of the top disk
drives of the time, hence consumes less access time. By utilizing redundancy, a
RAID array could be more reliable than any one disk drive. Also having the SSD
drives in the RAID, the access times decreases and the life span of these
devices are measured based on erase/write cycles and that would be 15-30k
cycles for Raid. It has a life span of 3-5 years based on the number of write

CD and DVD both of them are considered very similar and have
happened to have almost equal lifespans. But here when it comes to the topic of
data longetivity and data storage life span, the CDs and DVDs happen to have
5-10 years life span of shelf life if they are empty. But when these storage
mediums are loaded with the data, then they happen to have a life span of 3-5
years only. But while using these for storing data in cloud, the data should be
very less, in order words the number of CDs or DVDs chosen for this purposes
should be less to avoid data losses, which depends upon external factors as
well. The external factors being the way it is used: how often the disc is
used, then the optical media being extremely susceptible to damage as it has
less protection in the reading area i.e, top surface of the disc. Hence the life
span typically being 3-5 years, yet depends on the way it is being used.

Blu-Ray is a digital optical disc data storage format. It
was designed to supersede the DVD format, in that it is capable of storing hours of video
in high-definition and ultra high-definition resolution. Here the laser ray( blue color) was used to
read the disc and hence because of which the name “Blu-ray” came into
existence. The importance of this ray is that it allows information to be
stored at a greater density than is possible with the longer-wavelength red
laser used for DVDs. These disks come with a lifetime warranty. And
typically they last for 50 years and comes along with the forward compatibility
with the future generation modernized software.

M-Discs are
optical media storage discs that store the data for a really long long time. They
have the capability to survive overcoming the environmental/ external factors
such as damages caused by scratching and high temperatures. While the M-Disc is
a new format, it can be used with any standard DVD drive to read information,
but since the data is engraved into advanced metals, a special M-Disc-ready
drive is required to write it.

Hard disk drives (HDD) are
the disk drives which have the longest access times when compared to SSDs. And
their life span is fairly between 3-5 years, and life spans ends typically
because the component gets corrupted or fails, irrespective of internal drive
for a server or desktop, or an external hard disk drive. This is because the
HDDs tend to have all the parts moving inside and  friction and other external factors will also
affect this life span.

Rollback along with data refreshing in the storage mediums to ensure that there
is loss of data due to corruption or disk failures.
