Diabetes is a disease that affects more than 9.4% of the American population. (“More than 100 Million Americans Have Diabetes or Prediabetes”, 2017) Diabetes occurs when one’s blood sugar, or glucose, is too high. (“What Is Diabetes?”, 2016) The pancreas creates a hormone in the human body called insulin, which helps the glucose in the blood, a main source of energy in the body, reach the cells. The pancreas occasionally does not produce enough of the hormone, and the glucose remains in the person’s blood, so over time, too much glucose in the blood can cause issues.
There are many different types of diabetes, and the most common types include Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, and Gestational Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes affects people whose body does not produce insulin, therefore they are required to take insulin on a regular basis. Type 2 Diabetes, the most common type, occurs when the body does not use the insulin it produces properly. Gestational Diabetes occurs when women are pregnant, and is usually gone after the baby is born. People who have any type of diabetes have to constantly check their blood sugar, and keep it regulated. Present technology:Technology is important for diabetics because they have to use the technology multiple times a day to reduce any risks of possibly developing any new conditions. Over time, many people have developed different technologies to help diabetics.
Improved technology makes it easier for a diabetic to insure that they are healthy and in no way of harm. Today, almost all of the technology created for diabetics are self managed. Self managed devices makes it easier on diabetics. However, issues can easily be created if the devices are misused. There is many forms of current technology created to help diabetics regulate their glucose levels, including monitors that simply pricks the tip of a person’s finger and collects droplets of blood to measure the glucose in their blood. Doctors that specialize in diabetes recommended that diabetics check their glucose levels 6 to 8 times per day, and if not, they recommend that they check it after consuming a large amount any type of food.
This can become a hassle for diabetics, since checking your glucose levels takes time and you must do it multiple times. Another thing we have today that is used to help those with diabetes are enclosed patches that measure the glucose that is created by sweat. (Davies, 2016) This device is currently being improved, since it has some issues like that the glucose created by sweat doesn’t always reflect the glucose in the to the rest of a person’s body. Many technologies have been developed to aid those with diabetes and help them manage it, but no cure for the disease has been discovered yet. Another device created for diabetics is called the Dexcom G5. Research for this device began in 1967, however it took over 40 years to actually become a usable resource. Even though the Dexcom G5 took a very long time to be created, many issues are still caused because of it. The main problem with this device is that it is heavily relying on connection to a phone, which already causes many problems.
Phones are devices that can easily shut down, break unexpectedly, or simply cause troubles, therefore a phone is not a resource to always rely on. History: The earliest known record of diabetes was in 1552 B.C., when physician Hesy-Ra noted constant urination as a symptom of an unknown disease. (Swidorski, 2014) In the year of 500 B.C., the descriptions of sugar in the urine as well as the disease’s appearance in obese people was recorded.
The disease became known as diabetes in 250 B.C., named by Apollonius of Memphis. Diabetes was first divided into Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in the year of 1776, when Dobson discovered that the disease would sometimes become fatal in almost five weeks, while others suffered chronically from the disease. The first known treatment for diabetes was a dietary treatment in 1797, when Rollo treated a patient by enforcing a protein and fat diet, and in the 1870s, a French physician noticed the decrease in diabetes after food rationing during a war.
During that time period, the diet was the only known treatment for the disease. Today, diabetics use insulin to regulate their blood sugar levels. The idea of using insulin to treat diabetes was first introduced in 1908, when Zuelzer extracted a substance from the pancreas and gave it to diabetic patients, and the sugar in the urine disappeared in some and reduced in some patients.
Though insulin was used at the time, it wasn’t commonly used until later on. Benedict’s Test was used as a way to identify those with diabetes. The test identifies those with an excess amount of sugar in their urine, which indicates diabetes. (Giri, 2017) In 1916, the idea of using dietary treatments became popular once again, when Allen, who was considered a diabetes specialist in the United States, proposed a very strict diet that proved to have a positive effect on those with
