Cigarettes have been smoked by many people for centuries. However, smoking leads to various harmful diseases which can even be deadly, not only to the smoker, but also the people around them. Which is why a call for the ban of smoking in public places has been long overdue. Yet, many people argue that putting this into place just isn’t the right option, despite evidence that proves smoking is deadly to everyone. Therefore, smoking in public places must be banned. Cigarettes are full of harmful substances and are worth being payed attention to. Cigarettes have over 4,000 harmful chemicals and includes 43 that are proven to cause cancer along with 400 other toxins. The ingredients that go into making cigarettes are; Carbon Monoxide, tar,  ammonia, arsenic, formaldehyde, DDT, hydrogen cyanide and nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. Bystanders around the smoker have serious negative health consequences as well. Breathing in the toxic smoke is just as bad as the person deliberately inhaling it. Non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke in public places are at a high risk of developing lung cancer by 20-30%. Another study has proved that secondhand smoke causes more than 7,300 lung cancer deaths to non-smokers each year. Non-smokers have the right to clean air and a safe environment wherever they go. Cigarette smoke is irritating for many reasons, such as the awful smell and irritation it causes to the eyes. Most importantly, the toxic fumes which can enter our bodies causing many harmful diseases to our blood, lungs, heart, and so forth.Even though some may argue that by taking away the privileges of smokers to smoke in public is an infringement upon their rights. Non-smokers also have the right to breathe clean air in a safe environment and should be taken into consideration. Others may argue that there will be a crucial decrease in clientele that go to bars and clubs. This is just not the case, since non-smokers actually outnumber the smokers three to one. In fact, this will actually increase the number of customers since they will feel more comfortable to go out.In spite of how strong or weak the arguments go against the idea of banning public smoking, the bottom line is that smoking kills a massive amount of people yearly. Those who argue for the rights of smokers to smoke in public seem rather inconsiderate since secondhand smoke kills thousands of the people who don’t. For this reason, smoking in public places must be banned altogether as it seems to be the most logical option.
