At this very moment, an exceeding populace of the world is inagony by the malediction of poverty and numerous pernicious diseases. It isunequivocal that health is a pivotal force to overall human development andpoverty reduction, yet the poor endure a superfluous burden of ill health. Itfollows that God must appear to them in the guise of convalescent healthcare. Therefore, a comprehensive study of Public Health can be the resolution to thiscrisis.

The helpless cry of the poor has always haunted me since mychildhood. And so having studied the nuances of Pharmacy as my undergraduatemajor, I now long to advance my career not only as a scientist, who remodelsand adds to established scientific theories, but also to contribute in puttingan end to the suffering of this enormous deprived populace. Aprofessor in Botany, my father has always been a source of inspiration for me.It was he who always encouraged me to go for health science research. Sincechildhood, I have seen different biology lab instruments (like microscope) andmicrobiological slides at my home. I was told, when my mother was pregnant, shewas given a flower of Palash (Butea Monosperma) by a monk so that she givesbirth to a son.

At that time, my father struggled a lot to research on theeffect of Butea Monosperma on ovulation. However, because of lack of researchscope in Bangladesh, he was not successful. Yet there are numerous suchunexplored mysteries in the local areas of my country and South Asia, like somepeople take Papaya Carica leaf to cure dengue or juice of Cocciniagrandis fordiabetes. In rare occasions these “magic remedies” works marvelously nonethelessin most of the cases it results in casualty.

Furthermore, a number of religious”mumbo jumbo” for healing the sufferings of the sick are in vogue in thisregion. Because of this lack of research and existing malpractices, my dream isto conduct such exclusive research not just to satisfy my curiosity but also tocontribute towards improving lives of people in my society and the world atlarge. Myfascination for science manifested while studying in Motijheel Govt. Boy’s HighSchool, Dhaka. I had many opportunities to participate in variegated scienceexhibits at the school level. I have done my higher secondary from Notre DameCollege, Dhaka, which is a premier school, and first choice of any student inBangladesh. There, I not only got ample opportunities to conduct variousbiological experiments but also gained substantial humane input that reshapedmy value system. These kind of incidents and information fanned the flames ofmy passion for life science and I believed Pharmacy would be the area toprovide me with an opportunity to learn and explore how fundamentals of sciencewere applied in drug development, formulation and aid in improving the healthof mankind.

What followed is the most successful story of my life as I receivedthe prestigious ICCR full funded scholarship in Pharmacy from the Government ofIndia on the basis of my grade point in S.S.C (G.

P.A. 5.00/5.00) and H.S.C (G.P.

A.5.00/5.00) along with highly competitive exams all over the world. Iexcelled in Statistics and Calculus in S.S.C and H.

S.C level Mathematics. In myundergraduate level, the extensive curriculum with theoretical and practical sessionsof Pharmaceutical Statistics, Analyzing Data, and Biostatistics under thesubject “Basic of Computer Application” provided me a solid foundation of substantialquantitative skills. Additionally, subjects like Community pharmacy, DispensingPharmacy, Hospital Pharmacy, Patient counseling, Patient compliance, Healthpolicy and Global Health have revealed limitless horizons in the field ofPublic Health for me. As a part of my undergraduatecurriculum, I have undergone a one-month Industrial training at Shashi PharmaPvt.

Ltd., Ahmedabad. During the training, I had interacted with QualityControl, Quality Assurance, and Production departments. There I came acrossdifferent pharmaceutical instruments and got hands-on learning experience onhow to handle various pharmaceutical apparatus. Moreover, I have also accomplisheda month long internship in “Al Rafi Hospital Ltd”, Narayangonj as a hospital pharmacist. In the course of my internship, while counseling patients and health learningcampaigns I instructed people about health education, disease prevention andcommunity welfare. Interaction with the patients made me empathize with themand determined about working in public health sector. Itwas an enriching learning experience since most of the information we graspedduring this internship cannot be taught in theoretical classes.

I have taken part in tworesearch projects as an intern in the field of Public Health at BISR(Bangladesh Institute of Social Research). In BISR, I was involved in tworesearch projects titled “Chetona (Final Evaluation Study for the Protection ofBangladeshi Sex-Worker’s Children and those Affected by HIV/AIDS Project)” aswell as “Sexual and Reproductive Health Right Project”. The projects werefunded by “Save the Children” and “Plan International Bangladesh” respectively.

In the projects mentioned, I was responsible for preparing an inception reportthat included timeline and data collection tools (both qualitative andquantitative) based on evaluation questions under each criterion. Additionally,I reviewed relevant reports and studies e.g. project documents, baselinesurveys, vulnerability studies etc. Furthermore, I also assisted in developingappropriate data collection tools for project evaluation and participated in trainingon the key aspects of the survey evaluation that included data collection, analysis and interpretation. I was blessed to have a chance to work in thefields interacting with sex workers, HIV patients and other respondents and gota glimpse of the “day to day sufferings and lackings of public health awarenessof these people”. However, I also assisted to finalize the report after analyzingthe data by using relevant data analysis software (SPSS and STATA).

Therefore,my contribution was quite a key factor in the projects. Theundergraduate academic tenure, not only gave me a strong foundation inPharmacy, but also motivated me to learn more and goaded me to continueresearch related activities. I always had a keen interest in thepharmacokinetic and pharmaco-dynamic actions of drug and its toxic effects.Besides my curriculum, I worked on a project in my last semester wherein fivemembered heterocyclic moiety (pyrazolone) has been synthesized by reactingbetween phenyl hydrazine and hydrazine with ?-keto ester (ethyl acetoacetate)by condensation reaction to get the desired moiety which on alkalinepermanganate oxidation gives the corresponding carboxylic acid derivatives intwo series. The synthesized moiety gave excellent multiple response as CNSstimulant, analgesic, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory agent. This fullproject is published successfully in World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research.Tosatiate my inquisitiveness and reach for my goals, I have decided to pursue amaster’s program in Public Health.

I would like to get involved in researchwork in this area. In synch with my desire to put a mark in elevating theprevailing scenario of healthcare, Bangladesh offers a pertinent environment tocontinue my endeavor on Public Health after completing my master’s degree inthis specific field. Bangladesh is plagued with abounding problems in thehealth sector such as the lack of legal mandates and poor implementation ofhealth policy, lack of mechanism to ensure quality and funding for research andso on. Also, the unplanned urbanization growths of urban slums, recent Rohingyarefugee crisis are exacerbating the situation to a greater extent. With a viewto that, it is indispensable for me to get into a master’s program in PublicHealth to accomplish my mission.

Thus, the need for exposure to a widerenvironment and an ardent desire to delve in the field of my interest hasprompted me to seek an opportunity to study in Canada.  The choice of good university with a facultydedicated to teaching and research and an atmosphere conducive to learning, thus becomes extremely necessary.Aftergoing through your website I found that by taking Master’s at SaskatchewanUniversity, I would be able to venture into various subject domains and takeadvantage of the cutting-edge research facilities. The extensive curriculum andhands-on learning would prove to be an ideal launch pad towards my long-termcareer goals. I look forward to making meaningful contribution to the ongoingresearch developments and live up to the high standards of your esteemeduniversity. My ultimate goal is to build a challenging career in public healthresearch, which may even be arduous and demanding at time, but I am confidentthat with dedication and sincerity I will be able achieve all that I envisionfor myself.

Cognizantof the kind of commitment, perseverance and resolve I am expected to have, Ithink I am ready to embark on my graduate studies. Given an opportunity, Ishall strive hard to channel my unbridled efforts into more productive avenues.I am sure you will find me as a deserving and creditable student for yourrenowned University. KinsukKalyan Sarker
