Amirnext important move to coming closer to his father expectation was by comingback to Afghanistan and saving Sohrab, which he soon finds out it is his nephewand Hassan son. Amirfeels that by doing this good deed, he is proving that he was always there forHassan all along and is removing his guilt from the past action. Regardless,he had failedHassan when they were both kids, and also letting him get raped. Amir thinkthis is a form of redemption for him and being the man he needs to be so canlive up to his father expectation.
When rescuing Sohrab, Amir is forced to facehis enemy Assef, who he fights and defeat with the help of Sohrab. He uses aslingshot to hit Assef’s eye, letting Amir and Sohrab to escape. “What was sofunny was that, for the first time since the winter of 1975 I felt at peace.
Ilaughed because I saw that, in some nook in the corner of my mind, I had beenlooking forward to this”(pg303). This quote explains how Amir feels calm, andhappy after Assef almost tried to kill him. In his point of view, he thinks takingthat beating from Assef is him finally showing that he would do anything forHassan, and in a way, finally redeeming himself for sins he did in the past. But even though he does not defeat Assef by himself, he has confronted him withbravery, and lived up to his father words by being a true man he is today and saving hisfamily.
