It is a serious problem more specifically addiction to exercising. Many people seem to think that spending hours at the gym is normal while others see that as an obsession to make oneself look better. In either case, addicted to exercise is a sign of fatal consequences. Most people believe that having a perfect body means having an ideal life. They spend hours trying to look younger and perfect that they do not realize the harm they are causing themselves. When they spend multiple hours at the gym or home, they forget that they have a family to take care of. They lose control of their lives because they feel the urge to sweat or to just simply move around (“Exercise Addiction”). People who exercise every day know that they are forcing their bodies to do more than what is expected.
They think that by eating what they want and working out every day will indeed help them lose weight. Forcing the body can bring you to cause a severe illness or to damage a part of your body (“Exercise Addiction”). The excessive exercise begins to break families apart because they can not see how their loved ones are ruining their lives. Children at the age of teens start to see and develop ways to make themselves look better (“Exercise Addiction”). “These research studies agree that approximately 3% of people who exercise regularly are addicted to it; the condition is much more common in people in their late teens or early 20s”(“Exercise Addiction”). They afford to make time for their workouts but seem not to have time for friends and family. They engage their full time in making themselves feel better (“Exercise Addiction”).Gym rats or also known as people who exercise full time feel the need to stay in shape despite the risks of injuries.
Even if they do injure themselves, they feel the pressure to keep on going. They continue to exercise no matter the damages being caused or provoked (Exercise Addiction”). When they exercise every day, they feel satisfied and enjoy their bodies more. Addicted to exercise is divided into two groups; primary and secondary addiction to exercise (“Exercise Addiction”). Both of these groups cause people to continue to exercise every day. The primary addiction to exercise, bring people to feel pleasurable effects of endorphins that are released during and after exercise. On the other hand, the secondary addiction to exercise comes with the effect of eating disorder which means that nervosa and bulimia nervosa, as well as anorexia, comes in hand(Exercise Addiction).
When people try to lose weight, they start to recover and rely on provoking vomit. This means that they throw up and work out to maintain their dream body. These begin to start building the symptoms of addiction to exercise (“Know the signs of unhealthy Exercise Addiction”). Most gym rats begin to exercise in small workouts. When they start to see the results of weight loss, they start to develop an obsession to have a unique body. The symptoms of being an addict of exercise are the following: obsessing over the behavior, engaging in the behavior even though it’s causing physical harm, engaging in the behavior despite wanting to stop, etc.(“Exercise Addiction: Causes…”). “Exercise causes the release of certain chemicals in the nervous system.
These chemicals create a sense of pleasure or reward”(“Exercise Addiction: Causes…”). When people begin to experience the satisfaction of weight loss, they begin to obsess over exercising to maintain a body goal. “An exercise addict feels reward and joy when exercising”(“Exercise Addiction: Causes…”). Exercise addiction brings people to desire physical fitness meaning that they want to fit more into society by having a skinny body and not being judged by how they look (“Exercise Addiction: Causes…”).
Many exercise addicts want people to look at them as perfect, but others still judge. This brings addicts to exercise constantly every day. They start to work out three to six hours daily which for gym experts is way too many hours (“GoodTherapy.org.”).
Thirty minutes of physical activity per day has the power to prevent health conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Most studies recommend 60 to 90 minutes of exercise three to four times a week, but no single formula should be applied universally as training programs, and athletic demand will differ from person to person.(“GoodTherapy.org.”)When exercise addicts exercise full hours, they start to miss out on important events such as job events or anniversary events (“GoodTherapy.
org.”). They start to lose personal interest in hobbies and rather feel happy only when exercising. They spend hours sweating no matter if they are injured, sick or even tired (“GoodTherapy.org.
“). Gym rats exclude themselves out to simply be exercising; they even spend extra time by doing extra workouts. They limit outside work activities to get home and change immediately into their workout clothes (“Exercise Addiction: Causes…”).When gymrats exercise excessively, they develop a way to isolate themselves. They instead are feeling the sweat and eating less. Some addicts start to grow an obsession with eating disorders (“Stopping Compulsive Exercising.”). Many commence losing weight due to avoiding food and spending hours exercising.
They are scared that if they do not work out every day, they will gain weight quickly. Others are scared that they will go back to being judged, so the only solution they find is binge eating and excessive exercise (“Stopping Compulsive Exercising.”). For many addicts, it is hard to stop because they think that they are normal people trying to lose weight they do not accept that they have a problem. If they are told to stop they take it as a threat and have a behavior in where they get irritated (“Exercise Addiction: Causes…”).Eating disorders are complex, psychiatric illnesses, and many of the individuals who struggle with these diseases are affected in every aspect of their lives. Recovering from an eating disorder is also a process, in that it is often a long life journey. Managing an eating disorder, like anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder, is something that comes with time, professional intervention, ongoing support, and much more.

someone with bulimia or anorexia may use exercise as a “punishment” for eating, or as a means of “purging” calories that have been ingested (“Dealing With Urges: Compulsive Exercise…”). Dealing with eating disorders obligate the addict to push their bodies more than the body itself can do. This takes the addict to come into contact with diseases that late effect the individual’s life (“Dealing With Urges: Compulsive Exercise…”).
Many addicts know that they have a problem, but that does not keep them from accomplishing their goals of having a summer body (Charlotte). “This is crucial because most of society won’t. For most people, there is no such thing as too much exercise, and they’ll see your illness as strength, desirable even”(Charlotte). Many addicts want to stop but can’t seem to find the way to do so. When the body is forced it later gets hard to make the body feel relaxed (Charlotte). There are so many symptoms of how gym rats become addicted to exercise. Many unfortunately fall into the hands of death due to dreaming of being perfect (Howard).
“Yet when exercise shifts from a seemingly healthy habit to addiction, the signs, and symptoms are often overlooked-and the shifts happen slowly…like an eating disorder, an exercise disorder is a very slippery slope “(Howard).
Exercising starts from a person who just wants to lose weight its purpose is to feel great with oneself, but it ends in a tragic because many lose control of their body (Howard). When someone gets so obsessed with exercising they completely lose their intention to live, sleep or do anything and that is exactly what happens with people who become addicts(Howard). Exercising brings both good and bad consequences to your body. It is good to go out and run or workout so that way you feel good about oneself, but it can only be taken to a limit (Exercise Addiction).
There is a way to make oneself feel better but only if they accept the help being granted. Those who suffer from eating disorders often end up dead because most of their body can not resist the enforcement being taken. The body has a certain limit that can not be trespassed(Schreiber). There is a lot of help in which addicts can reach anytime if they choose to change their life.
Studies show that those who feel the need to exercise are those who feel depressed or need a distraction from the life they live (Howard). Addicts need help but are scared to be judged. There is a lot of help for addicted people of any kind, and the first step to helping an addicted person is to understand what they are feeling. The steps follow an individual’s life(Schreiber). Helping and reaching out to an addict can be hard especially if the addict is way too deep to get out(Schreiber). “When I was a young girl I began to have an obsession with looking way better and prettier than other girls my age. I wanted to be the center of attention and get the people’s compliments every day of my life.
My boyfriend at the time helped me get into a gym and get a personal trainer. The personal trainer did not help me because I never saw results. I saw myself fat and ugly. My mother would tell me that I was pretty the way I was but I could not believe that. I started going to the gym more often and sweating till I was completely soaked and without breath. I spent about five hours daily at the gym, I did not sleep, and I started missing out on my family.
I would constantly just think about the gym or the calories I was ingesting. I felt that if I ate too much, I would gain the weight back and that was what I feared the most. By the time I wanted to stop, I couldn’t because my body would not be calm. I had to be moving and sweating for me to feel pleasure.
It started getting worse and worse until one day I told my mother about what I had. She took me to the hospital, and that’s where I learned that I was obsessed with exercise. The point of my experience is to tell girls that no matter how you look you are beautiful and that if you feel trapped, you do not have to stay that way. Be brave and get help before it gets worse. Love yourself because your life is beautiful the way it is” says my aunt, Maria. The help that an addict needs is out there and a lot has been helped with therapy and talking to a psychologist about their depression or what has taken them to act compulsively when exercising (Exercise Addiction). There are also medications that medical professionals recommend for those who suffer from anxiety or depression, which help the mind relax throughout the day (Exercise Addiction). Although exercising helps you lose weight many things can cause it to damage your body.
Exercising should be done moderately because one wrong move and it can become your worst nightmare.
