assignment. This individual project will cover a number of topics such as

operations. Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics degree for
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will be satisfied upon completion of the
proposal and the project.



             Airline pilots are
facing a dilemma in the coming years. A shortage of pilots is challenging the
aviation industry and there is some debate on how it came to be and what is to
be done. This investigation will focus on historic events, legislation and procedures
that have been implicated as being a factor in the careers current status. It
has been estimated that a significant portion of the current pilots are
reaching retirement age, and new legislation is weighing on the production of
certified pilots. In a field where so many lives are regularly at stake, law
makers, operations managers and educators have to find a balance between
safety, proficiency, and timeliness of training.  Additionally, the cost of aviation education
and the time period to procure necessary flying-hours has stunted the interest
in pursuing a license to pilot. Moreover, students lack the resources even when
there lies a desire. The problems is, how does the industry keep up with the
demand for certified airline pilots at regional and commercial airlines and how
will the shortage affect passengers? A number of areas of deliberation are
discussed in this proposal that call for critical thought, quantitative
judgment, a rudimentary knowledge of aviation legislation, safety, and
management. This project highlights the pilot shortage, some issues impacting
the shortage, and some effects of the shortage, and lastly some resolutions. The
project will be reinforced by collected data from expert sources, an examination
of statistics, and the application of critical thinking.

            The student will prove an
understanding of how to expound on difficulties caused by the pilot shortages
that occur within the airline industry and with individual piloting goals and

demonstrated by studying and exploring developments within a time period that
has contributed to the airline pilot career deficiency, as well as analyze and
explain prospective resolutions. The student use information collected
from articles and resources that confirm evidence of a decline and the impact
of the pilot shortage on the
airline industry and its passengers. Information to support
this objective will come from exploring the Occupational Outlook Handbook for Airline
and Commercial Pilots from 2014-2015 and the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) Aerospace
forecast (2017-2037).



 “The student will show evidence of the use of
digitally-enabled technology & analysis techniques to interpret data for
the purpose of drawing valid conclusions and solving associated problems”
(ERAU, 2015).

            Quantitative reasoning
might involve the use of applications, graphs or charts, as a means to track
information, or determine the efficiency of processes in a numerical or
quantifiable way. The
student will demonstrate the Quantitative Reasoning PO and an understanding of
previously recorded investigations that include quantitative methods to resolve
or explore issues pertaining to the topic, and to determine estimated pilot
demand versus the productivity of qualified pilots and its effects on the
economy. The information required will be quantitative material that shows the
decline in the pilot industry and calculable data on the relationship between
the industry and flights, commerce, and passengers. Information will be
obtained from the FAA and Bureau of Labor Statistics.

pilots groups and associations, and research groups. Documentation will be found

            The student will certify proficiency
and achievement of communication in written, digital and oral form to master
this PO. The student will demonstrate these concepts by delivering a scholarly
proposal and project that support that the pilot shortage is in fact having an
impact on the industry, commerce and its passengers. The student’s project will
include an organized, well developed proposal, and a project that conveys effective

“The student will show evidence of
advanced concepts of aviation, aerospace, and

aeronautics to solve problems commonly
found in their respective industries” (ERAU, 2015).

            The student will display a vast
awareness and familiarity of ideals related to the aerospace community to
communicate and resolve problematic areas within their specialization. Aviation/Aerospace/Aeronautical
Science PO refers to the expertise and creativity of aeronautics; the
imagination of flight and engineering of how to advance it. Information and
data on some future developments that would impact the need for more pilots would be
necessary to effectively complete this PO. Material on new technology and
developments can be found on the Boeing website, and information on media such
as the Targeted News Service, and Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology.


Legislation and Law

 “The student will show evidence of the basic
concepts in national and international

legislation and law as they pertain to the
aviation, aerospace and aeronautics industries” (ERAU, 2015). 

The student will
illustrate fundamental strategies regarding the nature of inner and outer
airspace as it relates to national and international law. Aviation Legislation
and Law PO can be demonstrated by illustrating policies and guidelines that
have impacted the pilot shortage. 
Information and data necessary to complete this PO would be
congressional legislation and industry rules that have affected the condition
of the career. Evidence of these laws and rules can be found in the Journal of
Aviation Technology and Engineering, and the FAA website.



“The student will show evidence of basic
concepts in aviation safety as they pertain to the

aviation, aerospace, aeronautics industry”
(ERAU, 2015).

            The student will be able to present
knowledge of standard rules as it pertains to an individual’s well-being in the
aeronautics profession.  Demonstration of
the Aviation Safety PO will be done by showing orally and in written form, an
understanding of the reason for and avoidance of an aircraft accident or
incident. Safety data gathered by experts will be required to display an aspect
of aviation safety in a specific region of this business. Particular sources
for this information will be the information in the Long Island Business News
and the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB), Colgan Air accident


Management and Operations

“The student will show evidence of sound,
ethical management principles within standard

aviation, aerospace, and aeronautics
operations” (ERAU, 2015).

            The student will exemplify a virtue
of morality in respect to applying philosophies of management as it pertains to
processes within the aerospace industry. The Aviation
Management and Operations PO will be demonstrated by a discussion on the status
of the pilot shortage and what some hiring authorities are doing about it. The
student will rely on information gathered from aviation magazines and articles,
