Absenteeism in the Workplace A large amount of evidence has demonstrated that a positive work environment will lead to more benefits for employers, employees, and the bottom line. Whilst, a bad work environment brings as consequence psychological, psychosocial and sickness related, that can develop in absenteeism. That means that promoting a well-being place to work will reduce significantly people absent from their work. First, I want to show how psychosocial factors at work such as work environment, organizational conditions, workers relations, job content, culture, personal capacities, etc., through perception and experience, influence health, work performance and job satisfaction. Second, a well-being work-place is essential to promote a psychologically safe place to work, to develop a good job, to cop with a normal stress life and to be more productive and profitable at any organization because too much stress is the main cause of the most of illness that cause absenteeism.
Finally, absenteeism laboral because medical problems as minor illnesses, serious illnesses, and injuries can be developed most of the times for psychosocial and psychological problems at the workplace. As consequence of it is that more people are absent from work. The conclusion, absenteeism laboral is a problem for both employee and employer that affect negatively a group of people around an organization.PSYCHOSOCIAL FACTORS AT WORKPsychosocial factors at work refer to the interaction with the work environment, job content, organizational conditions, workers capacities, needs, expectations, personal extra-job conditions and culture, and how all those factors through the experiences and perceptions can be reflected in work performance, job satisfaction, and health. Low job satisfaction, dissatisfying working conditions, and low pay or benefits are some of the examples of the negative potentially health-related psychosocial factors that could affect negatively working environment. a.
Low Job Satisfaction:It refers to the attitude that a worker has done a designated job. The laboral satisfaction has an impact on the worker happiness, and consequently, it helps to increase productivity and reduce absenteeism. A motivated worker is a realized person who feels pleasure doing the job. A person can be satisfied not just with a good financial compensation, it could be a good health insurance, dental insurance, retirement plant, vacations, etc.A good understanding of job satisfaction and absenteeism can provide to directives of the company the perception to handle the consequences of the absenteeism at the workplace. Many studies report that job satisfaction depends as much on work values and expectations as the objective circumstances of the work itself (Lincoln & Kallenberg, 1990: 24-26).
b. Dissatisfying Working Conditions Sometimes it is believed that working is the greatest satisfaction for a person, because it is at work where a person puts to the test all their knowledge and experience that they have acquired with their study and with their experience. But there are times when more than pleasure what is felt is a terrible burden that must be carried on the shoulders and does not allow that work to be a source of satisfaction, but on the contrary, it is a source of continuous dissatisfactions where there is no possibility of improving or expand your knowledge. There are many factors that make a worker dissatisfied at their workplace, such as bad relationship with co-worker’s bosses and subordinates, bad working conditions, few probabilities of expansion, are some examples of dissatisfying working conditions that over the time this negative attitude will make a bigger health problem that in the end results in absenteeism. c. Low Pay or Benefits Every worker expects to receive a fair monetary compensation for his work that allows them to live with dignity and, offer to their family a better quality of life.
When a worker feels that their work is not being well compensated, or it is being exploited, that’s when the problems of absenteeism comes from.A well-paid worker is a person who arrives happy to carry out his work and who is looking every day not only for his welfare but also for the company to which he provides his services, that is why the companies at the time of contracting must measure well the cost/benefit of paying something fair and offering good labor benefits.A poorly paid worker may experience a feeling of anxiety, depression or non-conformity which leads them to seek a different job, which is not good for either the worker or the company.
