A single day consists of 24 hours. Did you know that each young adult spends an estimate of 3 hours per day watching television (“Television & Adolescents”)? Now if that were rounded up to about 24 hours, or one full day of the week, the amount spent simply doing so can sound a lot more time consuming. As small or normal as the amount of three hours of television per day might sound to most of you fellow teenagers, you may not realize just what kind of impact this has on your daily life. From your health, social life, to even your personal outlook and attitude, neglecting a healthy balance of television can affect all of these major aspects of your life in many ways. Think about sitting in front of a screen for 21 hours, indulging in the sole entertainment of watching television. As strange as it seems, this is actually what the majority of students have been found to be doing with their time. But the amount of time being occupied isn’t the only issue to worry about, you must also consider the physical effects it may have. For instance, given the average viewing time, this could very much cause a harsh strain on your eyes by forcing them to focus on a digital screen for a long period of time. As well as your eyes, another component to observe is the overall effect on the outer body, including poor posture or possibly lack of energy or strength. These are just a few which can result from remaining in a certain position for a constant amount of time, all the while reducing the amount of physical activity that is needed to keep your body in good health. Another important factor affected by television is the change it can make in your academic and social life. Estimating once again that the average student spends nearly one day per week in front of a screen, one should also try to consider what other activities they could be taking part in. Instead, the time being spent in front of a screen could alternatively be put towards more important learning experiences, completion of homework, or even extra personal time spent with friends or families. But if an individual becomes too occupied with the use of television, many issues can occur such as a becoming unfocused during lessons or incompletion of their school work, which can result in an overall failure in their academics and education. Events like parties, family gatherings, or friendly hangouts are all necessary parts of maintaining a healthy social life, but may also be overlooked if an individual becomes disconnected. Additional interests that one could turn to are any kinds of physical or outdoor activities, such as team sports or even a fitness regimen. So without these kinds of constant social interactions, one can lose sight of communication and relations with those in their lives, leading to an unhealthy lifestyle. Lastly, one of the most affected areas of students’ daily lives is their reaction and reception from what they see or hear on television. Although they may or may not realize it, it is very possible for one to become influenced by television in ways such as speech, behavior, or personal beliefs. For example, if a child watches a television show that include profanity or even topics such as drugs or alcohol, this can expose them to mature contents that a parent would rather not have them have knowledge of until they are of a certain age. Also, another example is if in a movie or show, violence or aggression is widely displayed amongst the characters, this could cause the viewer themself to somewhat mimic the attitudes of those being seen, no matter the consequence. Perhaps the most influential effect television can have is the scripted thoughts or beliefs that its characters hold, and their reflection on its viewers. Again, if in individual is constantly being exposed to characters so regularly, they too can start to think or believe as the characters do. For instance, if a child was raised from a religious family, but has an interest in a character who is absolutely against religion, he or she might begin to change their beliefs, all due to what a televised character says or does, instead of for her own reasons.Overall, while watching television is such a common, vast form of entertainment in almost all of our everyday lives, it is crucial for all individuals, especially those younger, to think about the possible repercussions it can have on you. One must always remember to not to allow it subdue any area in their life, whether that may be their health, personal life, or even your thoughts and beliefs, and to do so in consideration.
