Industrialization allowed for the advancement and visible improvement the standard of living of several during the late nineteenth century. Prior to this revolution in innovation and technology, America continuously relied on the output of ???agriculture or agrarian societies as a large source of income. However as American industry started to shift, more and more citizens started to take advantage of the market to buy and sell goods, benefit from the surplus of jobs, and reap the befits of the mass urbanization that had started to occur. The manufacturing industry, transportation industry, and the number of factories started to envelope America that paved the way to the rise in big business. Also as new machinery started to penetrate the domestic realm, people had more time and opportunities for leisure. According to Andrew Carnegie Hall, nineteenth century America characterized a time of opportunity, in which despite an individual’s economic background or financial means success is within reach. He highlights the significance of the “combinations of human industry, as stimulated and enlarged by the inventions of this scientific age”, therefore underlining the idea that this revolutions is supported by the innovative thoughts and the physical workforce (Andrew Carnegie, Wealth (1889)). He also quantifies the efforts of the civilians in the late 19th century by depicting the “thousands of operatives in the factory, in the mine, and in the counting-house”, resulting in the understanding of many in regard to the profound change society had chosen to employ in order to increase the opportunity for individualism and freedom amongst the people (Andrew Carnegie, Wealth (1889)).However, Terrence Powderly sought the argument of whether citizens possessed a larger array of liberties post the industrial revolution quite differently. In Terrence Powderly’s “Thirty Years of Labor”, he portrayed a point of view that rejected the mass industrialization that was set in place by big business and desired a united front of workers regardless of color or gender to retain traditional practices set by Lincoln’s republic . He urged for “a check ….upon its power and unjust accumulation” and “a system adopted which will secure to the laborer the fruits of his toil” (Terrence Powderly, Thirty Years of Labor (1889)). Therefore, creating a negative outlook on the urbanization and boom in industry in America.Although, both sources contain highly differing stances on the industrialization that took place in the late nineteenth century, I have come to understand that with the newfound opportunities and innovations the standard of living for many Americans had become more inclusive and free.
